The Scroll: Law Firms Abandon DEI Fellowship

At least 17 law firms have withdrawn from Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, a nonprofit that places “underrepresented students” at elite firms, after the organization and its 44 participating firms were hit with a discrimination complaint, according to a Wednesday report from The Washington Free Beacon. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission opened an investigation into the SEO Law Fellowship in 2025. In position statements submitted to the agency, 17 firms said they no longer participated in the program. The EEOC shared those statements with Americans for Equal Opportunity, the nonprofit behind the complaint, which identified the firms for the Free Beacon. Among them were Kirkland & Ellis, Gibson Dunn, Davis Polk, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. With fewer firms participating, the fellowship has already downsized, accepting only 58 fellows in 2026, compared with 104 the previous year.
